Chandigarh Tricity Layout: Master Plan Mohali 2031
As the title itself suggests, the tri-city includes three cities namely- Chandigarh (which is a union territory), Panchkula (situated in the state of Haryana), and Mohali (situated in the state of Punjab). These three cities fall in close proximity to each other and therefore are in the neighborhood, and conclusively called TRICITY.

The area of Chandigarh TriCity also has three other towns in within 15 km of radius. These towns are Kharar, Zirakpur and Derabassi. All of these towns share their boundaries with Chandigarh TriCity. These are periphery areas, but not exclusively part of TriCity.
Whenever the term TriCity has used all the three towns plus these three other towns are included whether be it for broadband services, sharing announcements, news, plan updates or for any other purpose.

Chandigarh is also addressed as Chandigarh Capital Region (CCR) and Chandigarh metropolitan region (CMR). GMDA and HUDA are responsible for the development of this region the full form of which it stands for is Greater Mohali Development Authority and Haryana Urban Development Authority respectively.

Due to the rapid growth of population shifting in the TriCity and many other factors responsible, the government of Chandigarh has proposed a master plan for the TriCity calling it TriCity Masterplan 2031.
WHY IS CHANDIGARH CALLED TRICITY?
Well, Chandigarh is also known as “City Beautiful” is the Union Territory and shares the common capital of the State of Haryana and the State of Punjab. The administrative authority of which is under the Central Government.
The literal meaning of Chandigarh is the Fort/ Abode of Goddess Chandi, derived from the temple of Panchkula. Panchkula is one of the two satellite cities of Chandigarh and the other one is Mohali. Therefore, collectively these three cities are named as TriCity being Chandigarh in the Centre. And thus, Chandigarh TriCity.

A LITTLE BIT OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY OF THE TRICITY AKA CHANDIGARH:
The initial masterplan of the city was developed by an American architect and planner Albert Mayer and a Polish architect Mathew Nowicki collectively. But later, the city was designed by a French architect (who was Swiss-born) and the planner was Le Corbusier (the mastermind behind one of the smartest cities in India). The characteristics of which were exposed brick and boulder stone masonry. This reflects the “honesty of materials” which were set amidst landscaped gardens and parks in Chandigarh.
The initial plan of the city was to be laid down in a grid pattern dividing it further into identical-looking sectors, the dimensions of which were 800 m by 1200 m. the aim of which was to represent the sufficient space for living, working, market place, colleges, schools and places of worships. The major public building included were the High Court, Museum & Art Gallery, Assembly, School of Art, Secretariat, and the Lake Club.
CHANDIGARH: Geological Location of Chandigarh is 30.74° North and 76.79° East on the fringes of Shivalika Range of Himalayas in Northwest India. Chandigarh is spread over an area of 114 sqaure kilometers approximately and shares the border with both the states of Haryana and Punjab in the south and north respectively.

IS MOHALI BETTER THAN CHANDIGARH?
Well, of course, if in general, we look at these cities Chandigarh is far better than Mohali, but still, before concluding to any result we should consider the points and weigh them in order to know the better option.
First, let’s talk about the location of both the cities. Mohali is the satellite city of Chandigarh whereas Chandigarh is a UT (Union territory) as well as the capital of two states.
It is really hard to identify the demarcations between these two – Phase 1 to phase 11 (old sectors/ phases) of Mohali are so intertwined in Chandigarh and Mohali’s Sector 66 to 73 are identical to Chandigarh’s. These Sectors (no. 66 to no. 77) provides the same infrastructure as Chandigarh. Moreover, Chandigarh is easily accessible from here.
Chandigarh is surrounded by Mohali and Panchkula limiting its scope of expansion any further, whereas Mohali can be planned for further development. The fact is Mohali is expanding and developing rapidly and thus, the international airport falls under Mohali.
Mohali is more affordable if you compare its living cost to Chandigarh and in fact, if we consider nearby locations like Kharar and Zirakpur it is even cheaper.
Chandigarh enjoys less tax on almost
everything due to its importance as UT, unlike Mohali. For example- the petrol is cheaper here, vehicle registration is also cheaper, property tax, and electricity and water supply are also comparatively cheaper.
To conclude whether you choose Chandigarh or Mohali, both the options have got the best in them, but if you choose Mohali just know that you are not losing anything major.

TRICITY MASTER PLAN
The TriCity Masterplan is very much similar to that of a human body with the clearly defined head as the Capitol Complex in Sector 1, heart as the City Centre in Sector-17, lungs as the leisure valley, numerous open spaces and green sectors, the intellect/ mind as the cultural and educational institutions, the circulatory system as the road networking and viscera as the Industrial area.

7 V’s- one of the unique features of its layout. It is an integrated system of roads divided in seven parts. The vertical roads are referred as “the PATHS” and the horizontal roads are referred as “the MARGS” and intersection at right angles of which forms s grid or network for movement.
The arrangement of roads has been planned as such that the residential areas are segregated from the city’s noise and pollution (of traffic).
The sectors resemble traditional Indian Mohalla in a way. Each sector measures 800 m by 1200 m covering 250 acres of land area.
Though educational, medical and cultural facilities are spread all over the city, however, the majors are located in Sector 10, 11, 12, 14 and 26.
Tree plantation and landscaping is an integral part of the masterplan. There are 26 different types of flowering and 22 species of evergreen trees planted along the roads, city parks, parking areas, shopping complexes, and residential areas to lessen the harsh climate of the area.
MOHALI MASTER PLAN 2031
Before telling you about Mohali’s master plan for the year 2031, you first need to know that it is not a whole new different plan. But it is more of a review of Le Corbusier’s master plan 1951. The present plan respects its historical legacy. The reorganization of the state hinders on the city’s growth and therefore this plan is an attempt to redeem it.
